Mendocino County Attractions

There are always dozens of fun things to do when you’re visiting Mendocino County. Lake Mendocino. Set among the rolling hills and oak groves of Mendocino County near the headwaters of the picturesque Russian River, Lake Mendocino is one of the cleanest rivers in the country. Mendocino County Wineries and Vineyards. Having failed as prospectors during the California Gold Rush, immigrant farmers in Mendocino County turned to agriculture as a way of life in the 1850s. More than 150 years since the first grapes were planted, nearly 40 wineries are thriving in three clusters in Mendocino County-Redwood Valley-Ukiah, Hopland and Anderson Valley. Grace Hudson Museum & The Sun House. While much of the Grace Hudson Museum is dedicated to the works of artist Grace Hudson and her husband Dr. John Hudson, there are many other exhibitions and programs. Discover the California North Coast, California Indian cultures, contemporary regional artists and Western American art. The Sun House is the couples’ 1911 home. Mendocino County Museum. The Mendocino County Museum showcases the history of the peoples that have inhabited the area. The museum showcases changing exhibits, oral histories and steam powered machinery relating the history of the Redwood lumber industry. Clear Lake State Park. Clear Lake State Park is on the shores of California’s largest freshwater lake. The area is popular for all kinds of water recreation, including swimming, fishing, boating and water-skiing. Anglers can catch large mouth bass, crappie, bluegill and channel catfish. Hikers enjoy the Indian Nature Trail, a self-guided trail that shows how the Pomo people, who lived in the area for centuries, utilized the area’s resources. Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens. The only public garden in the continental United States fronting directly on the ocean, Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens offers everything from colorful displays to thunderous waves. Manicured formal gardens, a dense coastal pine forest, fern-covered canyons, diverse plant collections and flower-filled coastal bluffs overlooking the blue Pacific Ocean are among the many attractions. Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree. The Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree is located in Underwood Park, just south of the town of Leggett. It’s the southernmost of the three drive-through trees available along the Redwood Highway. Chandelier is considered the “best” of the drive-thru trees based on condition, ease of access and alignment in driving through, as well as angles available for photography.
