Wineries and Vineyards Ukiah Wineries Tasting Hours

Having failed as prospectors during the California Gold Rush, immigrant farmers in Mendocino County turned to agriculture as a way of life in the 1850s. Saving the flatter lands on the river plains for farming food crops, these pioneer winegrowers planted their vineyards on the more rugged hillsides and sun-exposed ridge tops.

Success came slowly because of the area’s isolation from larger markets to the south, such as San Francisco. Business almost ground to a complete halt when Prohibition reared its ugly head in the 1920s. The small wineries disappeared and vineyard acreage declined. Only the efforts of the Parducci family in Ukiah kept wine flowing in Mendocino County in the difficult post-Prohibition years from 1933 until the 1960s.

More than 150 years since the first grapes were planted, nearly 40 wineries are thriving in three clusters in Mendocino County—Redwood Valley-Ukiah, Hopland and Anderson Valley. For more information, visit www.mendowine.com. [Top]
